The rest of the day passed quickly. There was dinner in a Parisian restaurant, a walk along the Seine, plans finalized for tomorrow and all the preparation they had left to do. Lily had told the rest of her crew there was no need to come to the races—if they went well, they would be over soon enough—but of course everyone had wanted to, and so evening found the five of them just outside Paris, surrounded by cool night air and the glint of unfamiliar headlights.

Lily pulled up to the starting line, her car humming softly beneath her. This was not a Durham street race, with its cheap beer and loud, pulsing music, college students made reckless with their parents’ money, but it was familiar enough—fluorescent lights and the feel of her foot on the pedal, the smell of smoke and gasoline and possibility. Lily let her gaze run over the car next to her. In the darkness, it was a slash of red, quick and hungry.

She would take it next.

And then she would take more.
